Fabric sofa care guide

Whether you choose soft fibre filled seat interiors or a firmer foam seat interior, it’s important to keep them in good condition to ensure that every time you sit on your sofa you can relax in comfort. Fibre filled cushions give sofas a ‘lived-in’ appearance due to their soft nature, so be sure to plump and reshape them to keep their shape and comfort, like you would with pillows on your bed.

Foam filled cushions start their life with a firmer appearance, but within the first few months of use they will soften. This is a natural process, so don’t panic it’s not a fault in the product. If you have foam filled cushions and seats, help them to age at the same rate by using them equally. If you have chosen a fabric sofa with fixed back cushions and arm pads, smooth out any creases daily to maintain the best look and shape.

Protect your sofa

To avoid fabric fading we recommend placing your fabric sofa away from direct sunlight, fires, radiators or other heat sources. If you are looking to place your sofa near a window, always try to keep curtains and blinds closed or dipped when the sun is at its strongest.

Snags and decorative detailing

If your sofa has any decorative detailing e.g. fringing and/or tassels, be sure to take extra care with heels, belt buckles and jewellery. Decorative detailing is used for aesthetic purposes and generally won’t withstand heavy use, easily becoming trapped. Whereas snags in the fabric can easily be caused by children’s toys, pets and shoe buckles. If you do come across any snags don’t panic; simply cut it off carefully with sharp scissors.

Stains and spills

Accidents do happen and however hard we try, spillages can occur, but they can easily be taken care of to minimise the risk of a permanent stain. Take a kitchen roll or a clean towel to soak up as much of the excess spill as possible and then consult your manufacturer care guide to treat the rest of the spillage. Always ensure to pat the area, taking extra care not to rub the spill.

Everyday advice

These everyday tips take less than 5 minutes to carry out and will help keep your sofa looking brand new for longer;

  • We wouldn’t recommend sitting on the arms or the front edge of your sofa, as this can speed up the wear process. Also, avoid putting any pressure on the side panels of a sofa, including the outside arms and back panels
  • Gently vacuum your fabric sofa once a week with a soft brush attachment to remove any dirt or dust, which over time can lead to dulling of the fabric paying particular attention to the front of the arms
  • Plump up any additional scatter cushions once a day to retain their shape and comfort.
