Pantone colour of the year 2022

In need of some colour inspo? If it’s the very latest, hot-off-the-press colour guidance you’re after, then knowing what the Pantone Colour of the Year is, is an absolute must.

Last year, Pantone’s colour experts treated us to a double colour feast, recommending not one, but two colours of the year. These ‘winning’ colours were grey (17-5104 Ultimate Grey) and yellow (13-0647 Illuminating).

This year, they’ve gone back to awarding one colour the 'Colour of the Year' crown. And that colour is Very Peri (17-3938), which is ‘a new Pantone colour whose courageous presence encourages personal inventiveness and creativity.’

Here it is in all its purple/blue glory:

According to Pantone’s Executive Director, Very Peri ‘offers a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue colour family, encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time with its violet red undertone, it displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence….’

Very peri: Blue with a modern twist

How do you feel about Very Peri?

We have to admit, we’re incredibly excited about it. Not only is it the first time a new colour has been given Pantone Colour of the Year status, but it’s also a stunning new take on the blue shades we already know and love.

What gives it a modern twist is its beautiful violet-red undertone infused with blue hues to create a mesmerising shade that’ll work with a variety of colour schemes. To us, it’s a unique blend of blue and lilac that we can see booming in popularity.

Whilst blues are often seen as a pop of colour, they also act as a neutral – making them incredibly easy to style. Modern and versatile, it’s one of those shades that works well in all rooms and looks wonderful when offset by crisp white, black and silver.

Better still, it looks just as good, whether you’ve got a blue sofa, walls, carpet or accessories, such as rugs, cushions and throws.

Interestingly, the 2019 Pantone Colour of the Year was classic blue, which is further testimony to just how fabulous a shade it is. In our opinion, you can’t beat a bit of blue

About Pantone Colour of the Year

Pantone Colour of the Year is an annual initiative that has been taking place for the last 23 years. It’s centred around colour experts at the Pantone Colour Institute™ scouring the world for new colour influences. These influences can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles, and socio-economic conditions.

Influences can also stem from new technologies, materials, textures, and effects that impact colour, relevant social media platforms and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention. Pantone’s Colour of the Year is pivotal in shaping product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design.
