Traditionally just for show, sitting on a Chesterfield was discouraged at first! Originating in old manor houses and later appearing in British gentlemen's clubs, this popular sofa design has eventually reached our own homes.

Over 200 years later, we think it's a statement piece worth sitting on. The term 'Chesterfield' describes the historic design of this particular kind of sofa from the late 18th century. It has been said that the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, Philip Stanhope (1694-1773) originally commissioned a piece of furniture with a high back to stop his suit from wrinkling as he sat down.
