Dining rooms are the place we eat our breakfast, dinner, tea, and possibly a snack or two, every day.

They’re also the place where many of us have now set up camp and are working from home.

But I think dining rooms deserve to be about so much more than functionality; be it eating or working.

They’re the hub of most homes, and the good news is, there are zero boundaries when it comes to putting our mark on them.

So pull up a seat, and get stuck into this article, where I have packed full of a whole host of delicious dining room design ideas!

Is the dining room making a comeback?

It really is.

Most people’s attention to dining rooms has shifted over the years.

Dining rooms are no longer being viewed as the place where we just grab something to eat, but beautifully-designed spaces, incorporating impressive dining room décor ideas we’re more accustomed to seeing in living rooms or kitchens.

This trend is believed to have been triggered by numerous things, but especially by people being forced to spend more time at home during the pandemic.

This led to many people re-evaluating the way they use their rooms, and how they can make them more comfortable, practical, and get the most out of them.

Multi-functional living is playing a huge part in shaping this trend, more on this below….

What are some major trends in modern day dining rooms?

1. Keep it simple

Less is more, right? When it comes to trending dining room ideas it is.

Dining rooms are naturally busy places, especially if you like to entertain, so pare back your furniture with just a few key furniture pieces (e.g. table, chairs and perhaps some feature lighting).

And if you invest in a stunning dining set, there’s no reason why your dining room shouldn’t stand out.

2. Go round

Most dining room set-ups are based around a rectangular or square table, which is perfectly fine.

But the trend for round tables is on the rise, and the beauty of them is, they’re great for turning unused corners into cosy little dining hubs!

3. Make a statement

Who said dining sets had to be plain and boring?!

Because they’re certainly not anymore!

Whether you invest in just a decorative table, a set of statement chairs, or both, the range of unique designs out there are taking dining rooms to a whole new level these days.

4. Think multi-functional

Dining rooms are now more commonly doubling up as offices, classrooms, reading rooms, games rooms, basically much more than just a dining place.

This new way of thinking and living has been adapted by many households, and meant they’ve invested in dining furniture that wouldn’t look out of place in other rooms.

7 dining room styles to inspire you

1. Luxe

Deliberately glamorous, luxe dining living is there to be noticed.

I'm talking polished metals, standout materials, such as marble effect, glass or metal, elaborate shapes and decorative leg detailing.

2. Scandi

Neutral-coloured dining table designs in shades of light brown, white or black are the epitome of Scandi dining room living.

The vibe is simple but highly practical with an undercurrent of design detailing (e.g. brown chairs with a white back and legs or a brown table top with black legs).

3. Relaxed

Sitting down to eat should be a relaxing affair, made even more possible with modern dining table sets that push the design boundaries.

For instance, corner seating, velvet upholstered chairs and swivel seating.

4. Minimalist

Many modern dining table designs embrace the minimalist trend, slimline legs and table tops, straight edges, simple materials and no fancy detailing;

just what’s needed – somewhere to sit down and eat at, work at, read at, or whatever you need to do!

5. Elegant

Some of today’s modern dining sets are simply stunning.

Slightly curved legs and seat backs, rounded edges, gold accents and polished finishes. Simply divine!

6. Farmhouse

A staple dining room and kitchen trend, the farmhouse trend has been a timeless, highly practical favourite for so many years.

Heavy wooden furniture, chunky detailing, open shelving and a little shabby chic here and there is the key to bringing this trend to life.

7. Industrial

The perfect look in lots of open plan living spaces, industrial dining is very much about embracing the minimalist vibe, as well as no nonsense design. By this, I mean strong, clean lines, wood grain and lots of exposed metal.
