Why choose a textured sofa?

When it comes to choosing a sofa, texture can play a significant role in both the comfort and style of your living space. Textured sofas not only add visual interest to a room but also provide several benefits that make them a popular choice among homeowners.

I’ve noticed we’re continuing to see huge interest in fabrics and upholstery textures that are visibly soft, not just to the touch, but that allow you to create a cosy, comfy and inviting home aesthetic, with sofas, rugs and carpets in plush fabrics that invite you to curl up and sink into them.

In fact ‘cosy living room interiors’ hit peak search popularity on Pinterest earlier in November 2023 which is a strong indicator that demand for this aesthetic is going to continue into next year.

Having said this, boucle fabric has been so popular, that our Winnie and Pasadena sofa collections in boucle upholstery, include a pet-friendly option - because, after all, everyone likes the feel of soft, cosy fabrics.

To ramp up this interior trend, I forecast styling your sofas with an abundance of scatter cushions and throws in plush fabrics to create the focal point of ‘Soft Style’ in your homes will become very popular.

What are the benefits of textured sofas?

One of the key benefits of textured sofas is the added dimension they bring to a room. The texture of the fabric creates depth and richness, making the sofa stand out as a focal point in your living area. Whether you opt for a chunky knit, a woven pattern, or a velvet finish, the texture adds visual appeal and enhances the overall look and feel of your space.

Another advantage of textured sofas that comes to mind is their ability to hide stains and wear. The texture of the fabric can help disguise spills, pet hair, and everyday wear, making them a practical choice for households with children or pets. So you can enjoy your sofa without constantly worrying about potential stains or damage.

When it comes to choosing a textured sofa, there are various types of textured fabrics I’d recommend, including chenille, velvet, and corduroy – each offering a unique look and feel depending on your personal taste.

Chenille is known for its softness and durability, while velvet exudes luxury which you can get for yourself with our Flo and Sammy ranges and elegance and corduroy adds a cosy and inviting touch to any room.

I’m particularly fond of jumbo cord sofas, such as our Chicago and Ross, due to their plush and laid-back feel. Renowned for their inviting appearance, corduroy sofas or chairs boast a distinctive fabric with a sumptuously thick and tactile texture, providing the ultimate in snugness. Effortlessly infuse any living space with instant cosiness with cord, elevating both comfort and style in one fell swoop.

How to create a soft and cosy atmosphere

When it comes to styling your living room, creating a soft and cosy atmosphere is key and I’ve got a few tips to help you achieve this ambience.

Firstly by choosing the right colours, you can create a soft look that marries up to the ‘soft style’ trend. I’d recommend opting for neutral shades such as cream, beige, or pastel tones, such as duck-egg blue, to create a calming and relaxing environment. These colours not only add warmth to the space but also make it feel more inviting.

Another way to enhance the softness of your living room is by layering with soft cushions and throws. Choose cushions and throws in plush fabrics like velvet or faux fur to add texture and comfort to your sofa. These soft accessories not only provide extra comfort they also enhance the overall cosiness.

In addition to cushions and throws, you can add texture to your living room with rugs. A plush, shaggy rug, such as our Mason Trapezium Rug, can instantly transform the space and make it feel more luxurious. Choose a rug in a neutral or soft colour to maintain a soft and cosy aesthetic.

My styling tips for textured sofas

When it comes to styling your textured sofa, here are a few of my top tips to create a cohesive and snug space. Whether you have a plush velvet sofa or a rustic leather one, here are some ideas to help make the most of your textured seating:

  • I love the idea of mixing and matching textures as I find it’s one of the best ways to enhance the visual appeal of your textured sofa. For example, if you have a leather sofa, consider pairing it with a soft faux fur throw or velvet cushions. This combination of textures adds instant depth and interest to your seating area.

  • I believe choosing the right accessories is key. I recommend opting for accessories that not only compliment the texture of the sofa but also add a touch of elegance or comfort. For example, draping a chunky knit blanket draped over the armrest of a textured sofa creates a cosy and welcoming atmosphere that I adore.

  • Creating a focal point with artwork is another favourite technique of mine to enhance the overall look of a textured sofa. Carefully choose a statement piece that harmonises with the colours and textures of your sofa. Whether it's a bold abstract painting or a collection of framed photographs, the artwork becomes a captivating focal point, drawing attention and tying the entire space together.

I’m sure you'll agree that with their visual appeal, practicality, and variety of fabric options, textured sofas make an excellent choice for anyone looking to enhance style and comfort in their living spaces.
